Guillaume De Smedt

Secondee

Guillaume De Smedt brings more than two decades of experience spanning climate transition strategy, carbon markets, energy management, and climate policy. At Carbon Measures, Guillaume serves as Co-Director of the Technical Expert Panel, bringing deep operational and strategic expertise to the design and implementation of Carbon Measures' product-level carbon accounting framework.

At Air Liquide, Guillaume leads the design and implementation of the organization’s climate transition plan, directs corporate environmental reporting, and oversees delivery of climate objectives, including neutrality ambition across operations and business lines. As leader of Air Liquide’s sustainability team, Guillaume also co-manages sustainable finance, biodiversity and water commitments, and the deployment of new regulatory frameworks and requirements.

Guillaume's career at Air Liquide spans more than two decades. He previously served as Director of Energy Transition and Director of Marketing and Strategy for Hydrogen Energy, developing energy transition markets across mobility and industry. In the latter role, he co-chaired the Study Task Force for the Hydrogen Council, contributing to the strategic frameworks that have shaped global hydrogen policy and cementing his standing as one of Europe's leading voices on industrial energy and climate strategy. Prior to that, Guillaume led R&D before moving into operational roles covering energy management, gas and power sourcing, CO2 quota management, and energy risk management across European operations and global capital investments.

Before his industry career, Guillaume was a lecturer in mathematics and physics at the University of Paris and conducted doctoral research in theoretical physics at CEA.

Guillaume graduated from École Polytechnique and holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics. His work is anchored in the belief that product-level carbon accounting is the key infrastructure needed to ensure decarbonization commitments credible, comparable, and actionable at scale.

He joined the Carbon Measures team in April 2026 on secondment from Air Liquide.
